About this listen

Charles Dickens' classic novel stars Alex Jennings as Charles Dickens and Pauline Quirke as Mrs Boffin. Adapted by Mike Walker. Following his father's death, John Harmon returns to London to claim his inheritance. But he finds he is only eligible if he marries Bella Wilfer. To observe her character he assumes another identity and secures work with his father's foreman, Mr Boffin, who is also Bella's guardian. Our Mutual Friend was Charles Dickens' last complete novel and is a satiric masterpiece about money. This complete Woman's Hour Drama, which contains all 20 episodes, was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2009.

A beautifully flowing adaptation

A wonderfully cast adaptation of the book which makes the amazing variety of characters come alive.

Clever adaptation

Brilliantly done. Love the dialogue between the narrator and the listener. Very good acting. Have listened to it twice now.

My Favourite Dickens!

A great production. particularly loved Bella Wilfer.👏🏻👏🏻 If you haven't seen the TV version, or read the book, it may take a while to catch onto the plots, but you'll love it! Luke a good read, I was sad when it came to the end.

Great cast but the plot has been butchered

Our Mutual Friend is my favourite Dickens novel so I'm horrified by the liberties the adaptor has taken with the plot. Some quite major changes have been made. This BBC version is nowhere near as good as the 1984 one starring Michael Kitchen and Simon Cadell, unfortunately.not available on Audible.
