Summary

A day like any other for security chief Tracy Waterhouse, until she makes a purchase she hadn't bargained for. One moment of madness is all it takes for Tracy's humdrum world to be turned upside down, the tedium of everyday life replaced by fear and danger at every turn.

Witnesses to Tracy's Faustian exchange in the Merrion Centre in Leeds are Tilly, an elderly actress teetering on the brink of her own disaster, and Jackson Brodie, who has returned to his home county in search of someone else's roots.

All three characters learn that the past is never history and that no good deed goes unpunished.

Kate Atkinson dovetails and counterpoints her plots with Dickensian brilliance in a tale peopled with unlikely heroes and villains. Started Early, Took My Dog is freighted with wit, wisdom and a fierce moral intelligence. It confirms Kate Atkinson’s position as one of the great writers of our time.

The best one of the series

This is my favourite Jackson Brodie story. I love the story of Tracy and her relationship with the little girl. This however is just a small part of a thoroughly satisfactory and intriguing tale.

Took a bit of getting used to

My second Kate Atkinson. I read the last one so this was my first listen. I enjoyed it, but as with the other one I had read I find the coincidences a little too much. It took a little while to get into as I found I was easily distracted. But got my act together and made myself pay attention and then I was hooked.

Brilliant!

Well paced, intricately interwoven plot, satisfyingly drawn characters and with the kind of moral complexity that I like in an Atkinson novel. The narration was suitably deadpan. Very enjoyable.

Thoroughly entertaining

Kate Atkinson is a great story teller and the Jackson Brody series never fails. Back stories and references to the events from previous books, gives the feeling of a continuing saga, even if not all are run in sequence.
Jason Isaacs' narration fits with the characters very well. Mind, I would pay to listen him read the telephone directory.

Such a depressing read with a hurried ending

Child abduction, the Yorkshire Ripper, corrupt policing, swearing, Not an enjoyable book to read. The last few chapters give a hurried précis, with characters you’ve not really known being key players. I found the whole book depressing and I would not recommend it. The narrator was fine.

Why bother?

I did not realise this was an abridged version when I downloaded the book. I hate to listen to abridged books and as much as I like Jason Isaacs reading this what is the point? I would rather the whole story or not at all.
