About this listen
The Azores, nine islands in the Atlantic, between America and Europe. Subtropical Island paradises, created by volcanic forces, with pristine nature invite you to discover and relax.
See the Pico vineyards and the windmills on Graciosa. Resting volcanoes and steaming geysers, surrounded by the green of the tropics, in between monasteries and settlements, lined with lush flowers thanks to the Gulf Stream.
Sao Miguel, Terceira, Graciosa, Faial, Pico, Flores.
Horta is the capital of Faial Island and, since 1976, the seat of the Azores Parliament. Elegant town houses, churches and palaces are lined up side by side. The Matriz de São Salvador church was originally built by the Jesuit order until it was banned in Portugal in 1759.
The largest and most densely populated island is São Miguel, the "gateway to the Azores". The former fishing village of Ponta Delgada is now a lively trading town.
The Furnas crater lake is idyllically surrounded by forests, but the Caldeiras also smoke here. Pineapple and tea plantations are as much a part of the island as the lake of fire in the most beautiful nature reserve on the island.
