Summary

It's easy to feel at home in Mitford. In these high, green hills, the air is pure, the village is charming, and the people are generally lovable.

Yet Father Tim, the bachelor rector, wants something more. Enter a dog the size of a sofa who moves in and won't go away. Add an attractive neighbor who begins wearing a path through the hedge. Now, stir in a lovable but unloved boy, a mystifying jewel theft, and a secret that's 60 years old.

Suddenly, Father Tim gets more than he bargained for. And readers get a rich, provincial comedy in which mysteries and miracles abound.

It's been a long time since I read these books...

...but hearing them again now doesn't disappoint. I wasn't sure about the reader to begin with - thinking he sounded a bit too old - but quickly came round to him. I don't know how you'd classify these books - they're so different from anything else in my library - but so worth a listen.

Easy, and uplifting listen

These Mitford books are new to me and I have enjoyed this first one, and the narrator, enough to order the 2nd and 3rd volumes.

These are gentle strolls through the life of Mitford and that is right up my street. Lots does happen, with real story lines, but really what I love is the small-town atmosphere.

My only gripe is that there is a low level 'hiss' on the recording especially when at higher volume using earphones outdoors which how I often listen. None of my other Audible books do that, so it is - so far - just these books, and it is irritating.

I love the Mitford books!

Delighted to find them on audible. It's even better than reading them myself. Great stories. Down to earth and up to heaven - like real life. I bought them all, but now I have Long Covid I can't read as easily, but can listen, especially as I know the stories so well.

Heart-warming & uplifting

Beautifully read tale of a small American town. The reader voices each character superbly. The writing is episodic but one is continually drawn in to the story and the development of the main characters & the author skillfully ties up all the ends.

Best Novel

At Home in Mitford is the best novel I've listened to in years, It made me laugh and it made me cry. It made me think that there are still so many good things in this life when there is so much turmoil in the world. I did not want it to finish. Luckily, there is a whole series to follow! Thank you John McDonough, the perfect narrator for this story.

Mitford

I enjoy listening to these books but wonder why all of the series are not on audible

It's been like living in Mitford.

I can only say that I have loved every minute of this production with its full cast of protagonists, presented to me via the voice of one man. If only I could live in Mitford . It must be the greatest place to be. Everyone is real, if maybe a little flawed sometimes, but they have integrity and a simple but sincere faith in God. Is there anywhere like this left in the whole of this earth?

Great escape

I enjoyed making a start getting to know the folks in Mitford. Take them with me wherever I go and need to escape from reality.
