About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
At a New York City wedding, in early summer, four people are trying to get their lives started.
Yun has everything he ever wanted, but somehow it's never enough.
Emory is finally making her mark, but feels the shame more than the success.
Andrew just wants to be honest, but has lied to himself his whole life.
Fin can't resist falling in love, but can't help wrecking it all either.
That night they see something none of them can explain. Someone sits down, and simply gives up. Soon it's happening all around them. Is it an illness, or a decision?
How can anyone really be happy when the only choice is to feel everything—or nothing at all?
An intensely compulsive novel for anyone who has ever felt hopeful and helpless in one breath, Are You Happy Now is about how you keep living when the world is on fire. Perfect for fans of Emily John St. Mandel's Station Eleven, Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go, Patricia Lockwood's Nobody Is Talking About This and Naomi Alderman's The Power.

I had to plough through this one
I bought this book because it was recommended if you liked Station Eleven and Never Let Me Go. I loved both of these books, particularly Station Eleven so I was really disappointed when I started to listen to this one. I was excited by the premise but I felt so much was lacking in terms of exploring what was happening, and why, and the impact on society. Maybe I am missing something, but could not connect with or feel any empathy for the characters. It felt like there was no soul - but maybe that's the point? I got fed up listening to the endless angst - it all felt a bit trivial when I wanted to understand more deeply what was happening. Narrated in a monotonous way - but again maybe that was the point?
I hate giving up on books but I have learned that life is too short to doggedly keep at it when I don't care what happens in the end - but maybe that's the point....

Great reader, not so great read.
The characters are quite flat and the only one who seemed to act normal was well, check out the end if you get there.
I had this book on 2.5x speed and still felt it was slow.
