Summary

At first everyone thought it was a game....

But aliens have arrived, and they are turning people into fertilizer.

Brad and Sam are gamers. And when they started playing the hot new game Apocalypse Online, they had no idea that the game was a preview of reality! With the help of a benevolent alien AI and nanotechnology, our heroes will have a chance to survive the apocalypse. They just have to survive, level up, and find other survivors.

Jake is no gamer. But when he finds out aliens have arrived, he'll do anything to protect his little sister, Sam.

Will they be able to grow strong enough for the second wave, or will they become alien plant food?

Apocalypse Online is a LitRPG/GameLit, post-apocalypse fantasy series filled with action, adventure, aliens, and snarky AIs.

If you are a fan of System Apocalypse, Defiance of the Fall, or the Sun Shadow series, you'll love Apocalypse Online!

Good book

Great beginning to the series. I am definitely interested in seeing what happens next. Authors do a great job world building and character building.

A tale not properly told.

How to sum this book up... That is the question. I honestly am not sure how I stayed with it to the end.

Don't get me wrong, there is somewhat of an interesting apocalypse story here of powers and crisis. Of people rising up to combat said crisis and of typical human-style bull manure during such events... It's just, well, the author tends to brush off everything, choosing not to delve into a moment beyond the very basic of commentary as the story progresses. They do this while also pointing to its humanity in such overt ways that you have a hard time caring or even understanding the motivation behind the words. There's no real life in the story at all, indeed no emotion or even acknowledgement past the 'oh this happened' statements 'Can't do that. Must do this. Oh no! Time to move on with the next task~! Tally-ho!'.

A perfect example of this is when characters die. The characters involved seem to shrug their shoulders and carry on like a school friend that they spent considerable time gaming with meant nothing at all to them. Or, for example, a young man watching someone being ripped open gruesomely in front of them is somehow just another Tuesday. An event that should be quipped at with gaming terms as the man bleeds out? This is, of course, while the character also laments that they wanted to save lives and the tragedy of it all... It leads to a brow being raised ever higher you listen along. Seriously, I've known more compassionate sociopaths than the majority of characters in this book. But now look, murder hobo protagonists are fine. That's not the issue. I only bring up the aforementioned because of the absurd comments the characters make about killing those that are trying to kill them. The characters and author are at odds with one another.

Then there's the confusing pacing of the book. I was under the impression for most of the book that the events going on were over the space of a couple of days, as all evidence pointed to this being the case. Then, out of nowhere, all the power is out, and wildlife has started to reclaim the city... Eh? So the book is either depicting the events over a 6 months period, or the description of what happened is just plain missing. Unless we are to take the ether mutations to explain the timeline...?

The bottom line is that the book is a mess and I really don't recommend it.
