About this listen

A radically honest account of surviving sexual exploitation in the Irish sex trade, in a psychotherapist's literary debut of past trauma and the integration of lives past and present.

It became untenable for me to remain silent about a part of my life I had long kept secret. I had to follow the persistent, uncomfortable pull of truth, wherever it would lead me.

From the outside looking in, the young life of Mia Döring seemed unremarkable, as she pursued her studies at a prominent Dublin art college, immersed in a vibrant social scene.

Unbeknownst to those around her, however, Mia's life was anything but ordinary. At age 16, she had been sexually exploited by an older man, which carved a direct path into the Irish sex trade, where she remained for several years until finally leaving it behind over a decade ago, at age 24.

In her literary memoir, Mia, a psychotherapist specialising in sexual trauma, excavates her difficult history as she sets about integrating her past with her present-day life. Along the way, she presents an ardent and intelligent refutation of a culture that affirms and applauds the industrialised sexual violation of women and girls, ultimately offering something more precious - a way forward for society bedded in true understanding and compassion.

Any Girl is a ferociously honest, intensely tender and utterly unforgettable book that is as thought-provoking as it is timely.

Excellent book

Really well written and brave book. I think Mia is amazing and so insightful on her own thoughts on what happened to her. It took a lot of courage to lay it all out in this book. I love how she writes too, so honest and quite poetic at the same time. I genuinely wish her well. Great insight into the trauma suffered by sexual assault. Well done Mia! X

Thank you for your bravery

To bring your story into the public light took a lot bravery and I’m so grateful you did this. I’m a Dad of two girls and it breaks my heart to think of how your innocence was taken from you and the abuse that men continue to perpetrate.

Read

Heartbreaking but beautifully told & insightful. A challengingly told experience that I'm happy to have heard and make me question many things.

Every young woman should read this

Feels incongruous giving a book detailing abuse 4 stars, but this is really wonderful in describing how pervasive the abuse of girls and young women is, the ensuing trauma and how that affects individuals. It’s also such a powerful antidote to the current narrative about the sex trade that tries to sell it as a wonderful economic opportunity for young women. This author narrates her own experience in the trade and it certainly shows it in another and very grim light.

Tough but Important Read

There was a hard read, there were points I felt I might not be able to finish it, but I powered through and I'm glad I did. The honesty and transparency Mia brought to her storytelling of her experiences was amazing, this story was not an easy one to tell. I'm so glad she wrote this book, and I hope others read it and get something out of it.

Such a worthy read

This was hard going in places, as you'd expect given the subject matter. It was also incredibly validating and relatable. Even though my experiences of male violence (yes, we do need to call it that, thank you!) have not been so extreme, there have been many instances throughout my life. This book made me see how those instances are not just me being unlucky, and they aren't because of something inherent in me. They are numerous because this behaviour is just so rife. It is so casually accepted. Not all men, granted. But too many men. And the rest mostly stand by.

Thank you for for not shying away from this.
Thank you for saying it out loud.
Thank you for this act of service.

Incredibly poignant a must read for everyone

Mia’s soft Irish accent juxtaposes the devastating memoir of her time in prostitution. The reader feels immersed as she delicately exposes the most painful parts of her life. Thank you Mia for telling the world your truth - women and girls need to know the really realities of prostitution. This is a must read for everyone.
