It's a warm August morning in 1926 Los Angeles, California. Mercedes Louise Allcutt (Mercy to her friends) is thrilled to be going to her job as secretary to private investigator Ernie Templeton - until she opens the door and discovers her mother on the doorstep. A funny and suspenseful story!

This is the first book I have heard of this author's. At times I found the humor a little slapstick as this takes place probably around the 1950's, when children were to respect their parents by their words and actions. Mercy works for Ernie a Private Investigator in California. Mercedes (Mercy) has lead a sheltered life so she is somewhat niave to things that happen at Ernie's office and out in the world of California actors etc. I found her to be quite an interesting character that gave me lots of laughs. I enjoyed how she wants to help solve crimes but has no idea of how to protect herself. I think Ernie is a great boss and the way he and Mercy interact is hilarious. I enjoyed how the crime was solved and all the things happening in the background of this book. I'm interested in reading or listening to more books by this author.
