About this listen

The number one bestseller and Sunday Times Humour Book of the Year by national treasure Bob Mortimer.
‘The most life-affirming, joyful read of the year’ - Sunday Times

‘Winningly heartfelt’ – The Guardian

‘A triumph’ – Daily Mail
Bob Mortimer’s life was trundling along happily until suddenly in 2015 he was diagnosed with a heart condition that required immediate surgery and forced him to cancel an upcoming tour. The episode unnerved him, but forced him to reflect on his life so far. This is the framework for his hilarious and moving memoir, And Away…

Although his childhood in Middlesbrough was normal on the surface, it was tinged by the loss of his dad, and his own various misadventures (now infamous from his appearances on Would I Lie to You?), from burning down the family home to starting a short-lived punk band called Dog Dirt. As an adult, he trained as a solicitor and moved to London. Though he was doing pretty well (the South London Press once crowned him ‘The Cockroach King’ after a successful verdict), a chance encounter in a pub in the 1980s with a young comedian going by the name Vic Reeves set his life on a different track. And now, six years on, the heart condition that once threatened his career has instead led to new success on BBC2’s Gone Fishing.

Warm, profound, and irrepressibly funny, And Away… is Bob’s full life story (with a few lies thrown in for good measure.)©2021 Bob Mortimer (P)2021 Simon & Schuster UK

Wonderful Man.

Listening to Bob is like listening to a Teesside version of your best mate. You want to hear every story he tells, buy him a pint then give him a hug when he offers you his fettaaa cheese.

A great insight into a wonderful life

Really enjoyed listening to Bob’s story, as a fan of his work in his 90’s projects as a young man, and now in my mid 50’s and a lover of gone fishing, to get an insight into a life and the person read in his dead pan style was wonderful.

Hilarious + heartwarming

Had me laughing out loud while on a airplane flight, walking by myself and just sat in a coffee shop. People now avoid me 🤣

An absolute delight.

What a fantastically funny, down to earth person Bob is. Recounting his successes and shortcomings (although I didnt think his acting in Randall and Hopkirk was THAT bad) some of the tales you wouldn't believe if they were told by anyone else. The story of the night at the BRIT awards is outstanding.

A Dove From Above of a book

Brilliant, heartfelt and funny. I really enjoyed it, he's very modest about his achievements and I think takes more delight in other peoples' success. A really lovely listen.

Great insight into a comedy legend

I chose this to listen to on audible after seeing Bob on "would I lie to you" and he made me roar laughing especially with his Chris Rea bath tale (which us included in the book). Great insight into his life and with his partnership with Vic Reeves. Not the best narrator which slightly let the book down but when Bob go into flow telling a tale it was much better, some of it felt like it was being read .

Loved it!

Funny, emotional, honest and daft stories from the most down to earth celebrity. Bob the - schoolboy, footballer, bin man, solicitor, experimental comedian, prime time TV star and "fisherman" - tell us his life story in such an entertaining yet genuine way - I loved it. Thank you Bob!
