About this listen

Cass Clereaux is good at two things: finding treasure and killing demons. Lying low is a close third - but not because she wants to be good at hiding. Cass is a FireSoul, one of the unlucky few to inherit a piece of a dragon's soul. On the surface, the perks are sweet - she has the power to find and steal any type of magical treasure, including the powers of other supernaturals.

But it doesn't come without a price; stealing powers requires that she kill, and others would destroy her if they discover what she is. In a world full of magic, hiding her powers is the only way to survive. Finding magical artifacts is the only ways to pay the bills. But it's a dangerous job when you can't use your magic.

When Aidan Merrick, the most powerful shifter in the city, hires her to find an ancient scroll, she doesn't want to take the job. His immense amount of power reminds her of too much of murky memories from a past she can't remember. But she has no choice. The scroll will reveal what she is. And if anyone finds out, she's dead.

Ancient Magic features kick-butt heroines, a hot hero, and otherworldly adventure.

Brilliant, great characters and story - read it!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. I listened to the book and got caught up in the story and with the characters. To an extent that I purchased the next book in the series and listened to that without remembering to come and review this. It's really easy to listen to and enjoy the story with a very strong female lead (backed by two others).

Who was your favorite character and why?

Cass and Aidan. I've got to pick two not because the characters need each other to work but because they work so well together. In this book and the next. Saying that Del and Nix and their friends are all really good characters. It's a book that was seriously so enjoyable that I can't fault anyone and thought that all of the characters were excellent!

What does Laurel Schroeder bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Really good voice for our main character, Cass. She makes the character sound a mixture of confident and nervous, strong yet fragile. But still kick-ass. I also like the authority and confidence that she gives to Aidan.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I loved it. I seriously finished it and purchased the next one. Really good!!

Enjoyable

I like this story so far, it's intriguing and has lots of unanswered questions I want to know the answers to, so I'm looking forward to listening/reading more to find them.

The storyline of the sisters not knowing their past or what happened to them is a really interesting subplot within the world of magic, it has lots of potential which I hope the series lives up to

Listened to this in one go

I could not stop listening to this I had to know what happened next. The story is different and has lots of twists. The plot is different not your normal run of the mill witch mysteries. I loved the twist at the end.
I loved the characters and I do hope audible buy the rest of the series soon.
Enjoy😄

good story

too much going over the same information especially for a short book, felt like padding out, not necessary.

Leaves you wanting more

Loved it. You can feel the tension between the two lead characters. I felt myself saying just tell him your secret!.... Not your usual supernatural novel. Engaging, fast paced and so many twists.

Audible when's the next book going to be available.

Mixed bag

Would you try another book written by Linsey Hall or narrated by Laurel Schroeder?

I'd certainly listen to other books narrated by Laurel Schroeder.

I'm reserving judgement on Linsey Hall books. I be got the next one in the series to listen to but... it depends if she gives up on the over-emphasised love-interest theme that is obsessively repeated this book.

Would you recommend Ancient Magic to your friends? Why or why not?

Probably not.

Did Ancient Magic inspire you to do anything?

It inspired me to shake the main protagonist until she agrees never EVER to mention how she mustn't fall for the hotness of the ovely idealised love-interest character again.

Any additional comments?

The story was sadly spoiled by the boringly-repetitive "He's-so-hot-but-I-mustn't" thread - We get it, he's a the over-idealised god-like embodiment of all that is kind and generous and good and hot and you can't get involved because he's powerful and may guess your secrets. We got that the first time so just shut-up about it already!!!!

{SIGH!}

I'm going to try the next book. Hopefully, now that he knows her secret, she'll stop belabouring the point.
