About this listen
A desperate housewife’s hilarious and moving tale of chaos, hope and self-discovery.
A story of love, hate, revenge and ... goats.
Meet Clem Elliot. Part-time BBC clerk. Wife to Ryan. Mother to twins, Jack and Stan.
For nearly twenty years, life for Clem is cushty. Until suddenly, it’s not.
So what does she do? She runs away to the Greek islands to join a sailing circus, of course.
Here, she masters tricks with staple guns, goats and the very fanciable, but unscrupulous womaniser, Captain Red.
However, as wire-walking, fire-breathing and swabbing the deck become the norm, and her newfound skills wow audiences across the Ionian, a chance encounter with a wrathful rabble brings with it a ghost from her past.
Can the outlandish circus troupe ever be her real future? Or has the time come for Clem to get real and return to the mess she left behind?

Unpredictable zebra!! Not quite what I expected
At first I wasn't sure what was happening or why I was listening to this book. It seemed to be unapologetically aimless. But then, like a game mastered by a sharp strategist, the pieces started to slide into place.
There are two timelines woven together. There is now and then there is the past. And until the two converge, there are a lot of roller coaster rides where the audience swings between loving and hating various characters. But overall, this is a book about loving and accepting oneself. It is about going after what one wants and needs, unapologetically.
Despite its elements of absurd, it is hard not to relate to Clem. She is a flawed character, going through some very relatable experiences. I, in turns, loved her, hated her and cringed for her. But more than anything she is remarkably brave and for that I feel only love.

Overall, this was an unusual, well narrated and enjoyable book. It certainly wasn't what I was expecting!
