About this listen

The newly-discovered novel from multi-million-selling author Joy Ellis. Never before published!

Flower shop owner Ellie McEwan is driving home late one frosty November night when a shadowy figure leaps into the road out of nowhere. Ellie swerves to avoid him — and slams head-on into the crash barrier.

Days later, Ellie wakes up in hospital — and notices there’s something different. Everyone she looks at — the doctor, the nurse, her friend Carole — is surrounded by a coloured aura. Her near-death experience seems to have given her a new ability.

And now Ellie must use her new-found gift to catch a killer.

The battered body of a young woman is found in the grounds of a local hotel. She’s the third woman to be murdered in this sleepy Surrey village, her hands crushed and mutilated. Just like the other two.

Each of the women was a skilled professional — a musician, a doctor and an artist. Apart from that, they appear to have nothing in common.

And now the police’s one lead — a key witness — is missing.

Although sceptical, a desperate DCI Bob Foreman calls on Ellie for help. But Ellie’s involvement in the investigation will throw her into the path of a brutal killer . . .

DISCOVER A TOTALLY ENTHRALLING MYSTERY.

This utterly gripping crime thriller is perfect for fans of L.J. Ross, J.D. Kirk, Elly Griffiths, Susan Hill, Kate Ellis or Ann Cleeves.

Surprisingly good

I really enjoyed this. Surprised it didn’t get published earlier as it’s one of those compulsive books that you get through all in one go.

The detective story element is very well done, and the supernatural element isn’t too daft, it actually adds to the story rather than feeling tacked on or silly like a lot of similar books.

I think I preferred this to a lot of her more recent work as it doesn’t have any of that clunky self-referencing nonsense (“are you sure you haven’t worked with detective Nicki Whatsherface?”).

Ellie is obviously a bit too nicey-nice, which can be annoying but can also be forgiven since it’s an early work, but Carol is cool and I’d love to be friends with her.

Narrator is also a bit too nice and girly but I got used to her (I think it’s just me, I have very strong voice preferences) and at least she didn’t do any especially glaring mispronunciations. The end credits even mention audio proofing, which a great many audiobooks could benefit from - publishers take note ;)

Overall this is really enjoyable, and it was free from the Plus catalogue - cheers Audible!

Took some getting into

A bit of a long winded start which felt like as soon as it got interesting it was nearing the end!

A story well written and read

Brilliant as usual with Joy Ellis’s books - could not stop listening - just love the flow of her stories and have listened to them all - if someone had said some 6 months ago I would find Joy’s detective novels more than interesting I would have laughed - but there you go - it takes skill to change the habits of a reader or listener in her late seventies.

unique

loved this, story was really unusual but plausible. narration was great, loved the characters. although Ellie is just super sickly sweet nice and conducts herself perfectly at all times, which makes for a heartwarming story but was a bit much at times. overall absolutely loved it
