About this listen

Amygdala is a story of animals, born to a world of swirling, fractal chaos, who learned the art of civilization. Their government was forged in fire, ruled only by the objective truth of all things, with no room for incompetence, mercy, or even morality. Their city, 'The Underbirth', holds within it the greatest collection of animal minds, born of mechanical systems designed to test everything: natural, cultural, industrial selection. Their art is beguiling, their science boundless, their bodies strong and lean and perfect.

And yet, amidst the beauty of a culture ruled by absolute competence, some begin to ask: what is the cost of civilization? When do animals stop being animals? Is there another way?

An Unforgettable Experience

I have sung my praises of this book many times across several platforms, and will continue to do so here! The worldbuilding here is intricate, fascinating, incredibly unique, and oozing with creativity.
Sam's writing sucks you in, keeping you curious, wanting to learn more about this mysterious world, its multifaceted and wondrous creatures, and the intricacies of their alien politics. Through the eyes of a very large cast of colorful and bizarre characters, both metaphorically regarding their well-written personalities and literally regarding their beautiful and strange designs, we get to witness political, philosophical, artistic, and sociological ideas clash and battle for dominance. The story that unfolds is a gripping one, told from many perspectives. There are no simply good or bad characters (in a moral sense); all have their own moments where I found myself wanting to engage in a dialogue with characters on all sides of the many arguments presented here.
A particular treat in the audiobook adaptation specifically is the original soundtrack. The music helps to paint a wondrous picture, and the various motifs that appear throughout the story help me to keep track of the book's vast cast of characters. The author's narrative performance is delightful as well; the various accents and inflections of each character are unique and engaging, making for a very entertaining listening experience.
While the setting and subject material of this book may not be everyone's cup of tea -- do be sure to heed the author's warning -- I thoroughly enjoyed returning to this story for the second time, and would highly recommend it to those who want to engage with a book that is original, thought-provoking, and unabashedly creative!

Wonderfull

If you've already read the book, and are asking yourself if this version is worth your time.. Then the answer is yes. Yes it is. The music really brings the world to life, with recurrent melodies for certain characters, atmospheric tunes that put you in the streets of Amygdala, and songs that will stick to your brain and make you wish for a seperate album. So that you may listen to them again and again. With the authors clear speech and various voices to bring it all together, I highly recommend it! And you haven't read it before.. Then please consider a listen. You'll certainly find something you like in this strange world!

The unique world building

The author, Sam Fennah, narrates this book superbly. I have read the physical book, that was imaginative and expertly crafted. The book has feels of Lovecraft and HG Wells, although Fennah has his own very unique writer’s voice.
A truly immersive experience with original music, this audio book will not disappoint those who love the genres of fantasy, new world epics, dragons and other worldly creatures.
The character building and plot are extra special. Each character has unique drivers, and plots intertwine superbly. I felt I was watching an epic film in my mind as I listened.

With a second book in a series of six planned, this will be a collection I will be excited to say I discovered before the hoards. First editions will be collectors’ pieces for sure. What a narrator’s voice Fennah has … up there with the best.
