Summary

Two New York Times best-selling authors unveil new research showing what meditation can really do for the brain. In the last 20 years, meditation and mindfulness have gone from being kind of cool to becoming an omnipresent Band-Aid for fixing everything from your weight to your relationship to your achievement level. Unveiling here the kind of cutting-edge research that has made them giants in their fields, Daniel Goleman and Richard J Davidson show us the truth about what meditation can really do for us, as well as exactly how to get the most out of it. Sweeping away common misconceptions and neuromythology to open listeners' eyes to the ways data has been distorted to sell mind-training methods, the authors demonstrate that beyond the pleasant states mental exercises can produce, the real payoffs are the lasting personality traits that can result. But short daily doses will not get us to the highest level of lasting positive change - even if we continue for years - without specific additions. More than sheer hours, we need smart practice, including crucial ingredients such as targeted feedback from a master teacher and a more spacious, less attached view of the self, all of which are missing in widespread versions of mind training. The authors also reveal the latest data from Davidson's own lab that point to a new methodology for developing a broader array of mind-training methods with larger implications for how we can derive the greatest benefits from the practice. Exciting, compelling, and grounded in new research, this is one of those rare books that has the power to change us at the deepest level.

A master-piece

I could not recommend this book highly enough. It is very readable and enjoyable written. But it is also one of the most hard-nosed and serious science books out there in the field. Davidson and Goleman have been at the forefront of the very field that changes the way psychologists and neuroscientists think about human potential. How lucky we are that they have shared the journey and findings in such a great format!

inspiring and astonishing

This is a must read for all. I have followed this research for decades and have experienced what is evident in this book. Since my initial discovery in the mid 90s of meditation i have been an daily meditator. it has transformed my life. I could not read or write as I am dyslexic and had no qualifications. I now have 30yrs a masters and work as a Psychotherapist. although this also has to do with being in a loving relationship I feel meditation has had a significant positive impact on my psychological wellbeing. it is clear to me that meditation alters traits toward more empathic and compassionate qualities.

Loved the research

Very impressive research and facts and findings put across in a very accessible way. Who was it said: “If every 8 year old was taught to meditate, there would be world peace in a generation.”? I love that powerful idea, and of course we can all benefit from a little daily practice.

I found this went into great depth

This was very detailed but rightly so. At times, I had to really concentrate to follow and I did a lot of rewinding.

I am a beginner to meditation, but a scientist. This is why it worked for me. I do believe that in life there are no short cuts for what is worth doing. Thus it was necessarily detailed.

Having listened to this I will continue to follow their more recent work.

Fascinating

A fascinating work, based on actual years of research. Probably, one of the most, if not the most serious books on the topic out there

A good mixture of science, intuition, and enquiry.

This book contains an animal into the explorations of two scientists into the world of meditation. Furthermore, it offers re-sources and concepts that can improve daily life, using the different kinds of meditation.

V interesting, but could be more concise.

Learnt a lot, but it doesn't quite meet the gold standard of accessible science research that is set by 'Why we Sleep.' Often too many sentences than are necessary and lots of filler and repetition about the history of the field, biographies of the researchers and the fallibility of psychological studies, which are all interesting in their own right and relevant to the discussion. When it finally gets to the science, it is very compelling, and I'm now watching this growing field with interest. Definitely worth a listen, it's a good audiobook to meditate with ;)
