About this listen
Fans of Jodi Picoult and Fredrik Backman will fall for this tenderhearted debut mystery following a young girl on a quest to save her family.
I know my brother is dead. But sometimes Mama gets confused.
There’s plenty about the grownup world that six-year-old Aoife doesn’t understand. Like what happened to her big brother Theo and why her mama is in the hospital instead of home where she belongs. Uncle Donny says she just needs to be patient, but Aoife’s sure her mama won’t be able to come home until Aoife learns what really happened to her brother. The trouble is no one wants to talk about Theo because he was murdered. But by whom?
With her imaginary friend Teddy by her side and the detecting skills of her nosy next door neighbor, Aoife sets out to uncover the truth about her family. But as her search takes her from the banks of Theo’s secret hideout by the river to the rooftops overlooking Detroit, Aoife will learn that some secrets can’t stay hidden forever and sometimes the pain we bury is the biggest secret of them all.
Driven by Aoife’s childlike sincerity and colored by her vivid imagination, All That’s Bright and Gone illuminates the unshakable bond between families - and the lengths we’ll go to bring our loved ones home.

The readers voice
I nearly gave up on this book because the reader doing a child’s voice was SO irritating. It was unnecessary. However the subject was interesting. Would not recommend.

Narration & story par excellence!
I enjoyed ever minute of listening to this book. I struggle to read as I find wearing glasses for any prolonged period to be very uncomfortable, so I listen to a lot of audiobooks, both purchased and from the plus catalogue and unfortunately, I generally feel underwhelmed by the experience. This is due to a combination of irritating narration by a reader who is never "in" the story, so misses all manner of subtleties and nuances that overall contribute to the listening experience. Then there are those books that leave me vowing to write a novel myself, on the basis that such utter dross was ever published. What a singular treat then to find this beautifully crafted story told through the eyes of an engaging central character, Aoife, who is six years of age. We as listeners are able to read between the lines and with our adult perception can watch events unfold in a way that a child of Aoife's age is unable to wholly comprehend. It is a lovely story, I was really moved at times as I ididentified with the remembered feeling of having very little control of my life as a child. There is a description of someone placing a hand on Aoife's shoulder and she wants the person to take it off but doesn't want to be impolite; that resonated with me as I distinctly recall incidences just like that, where good manners prevented me from shying away from physical contact from a little- known person outside of the family, or family friends. Writing that one can connect with like that is to me, the epitome of descriptive and immersive story telling.
And the narration, I've never heard better. To capture a child's voice without ever over embellishing nor causing me to feel irritated meant that I was swept away by the story and truthfully, I can't imagine having enjoyed listening anywhere near as much without Ms Vilinsky's gentle cadence and beautiful voice, perfectly pitched to deliver an outstanding performance.
I am delighted to discover a new author, Ms Nellums and narrator Ms Vilinsky of such high calibre and give thanks to all involved in the production of this audiobook.

Beautiful story
I wasn’t sure initially if I was going to enjoy this book but it was truly beautiful and sad at the same time. The narration is superb bringing the writing to life. Well written and accurate in terms of how small children think and speak. Definitely recommend and hope the author produces more like this.

Superb
Superbly narrated and a beautiful story.
Probably my favourite audio book of all time.
I really loved the innocent, imaginative and insightful perspective of the 6yr old who tells the story, and I didn’t want the book to end

What a lovely surprise
I really enjoyed the narration - from that of the child, Aoife. What a dear, sweet little girl. I didn’t have high hopes for this book and I was so pleasantly surprised. Delightful. Despite the heavy themes, it was a quick easy read.
