About this listen

Devilishly attractive Lord Illingworth is notorious for his skill as a seducer. But he is still invited to all the "best" houses, while his female conquests must hide their shame in seclusion. In this devastating drawing-room comedy, Oscar Wilde uses his celebrated wit to expose English society's narrow view of everything from sexual mores to Americans.© and (P) L.A. thoroughly enjoyable performance

This is the first dramatisation I have listened to, I usually just listen to audio books. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this and will be looking for more. The cast were great. I laughed and smiled all the east through.

Too screechy for me

Samantha Mathis is one of my favourite actresses, and I really wanted to enjoy this, but I didn't like the screechiness of the other actresses voices. As a result, I only got half way through. This was probably exacerbated by the fact that I was listening while commuting, so I had to have the volume up quite loud, I might try again in a quieter environment.

SPOILT BY LIVE AUDIENCE LAUGHTER & M MARGOLYES

This is one of my favourite plays, Unfortunately as per most LA productions, their plays are mostly recorded with live audience laughing and this spoils it for me, as does the hideous canned laughter. I just find it so off putting. I listened once to this but after 10 minutes it was too much, I switched off. I have other much better productions of this play without audience that are very enjoyable, Also, the normally funny Miriam Margolyes rushes her lines like she is in a rush to finish as quickly as possible to catch her bus home, which I wish she had done, for she has ruined the part.
