About this listen
Escape to snowy Sweden this Christmas in the gorgeous novel from the author of The Oyster Catcher. Fans of Jill Mansell and Milly Johnson will love this unforgettable winter story from Jo Thomas.
Halley has been running from her problems for years.
On a courier trip to Tallfors, deep in Swedish Lapland, everything is going to plan. Halley has her bag, with two precious wedding rings inside for delivery... until she doesn't.
The only way to save the wedding is to team up with mysterious reindeer herder Bjorn, the one person who can lead her across the snowy tundra to be reunited with her bag.
On a journey of a lifetime beneath the stars, with only the reindeer and a bad-tempered stranger for company beside the fire, Halley realises that she will need to confront her past heartaches in order to let the warmth of love in once more...

A good story with fabulous narration
Having read Winter Island by Jo Thomas and enjoyed it very much, I went straight on to this one because I love reading about snowy places. At first I thought it was going to be a bit too comic for my taste, but it turned into a good adventure with plenty to learn about Lapland and reindeer herding, and loads of romance thrown in too. That got a bit too much for me towards the end, but generally I really enjoyed this. I think the writer is very clever in the way she draws characters and storylines together to make a satisfying ending. The narration is absolutely superb, I couldn’t fault it in any way. A pleasure to listen to, and I can’t understand why Madeleine Leslay doesn’t narrate a lot more.

spoilers ahead!
I'm giving it 4 stars for the nostalgia feels of the north.
This was a bit problematic for me as there were things that were just...off. Not true to fact. But, those aren't really things anyone but a swede would know.
We don't eat "smörgåsbord" all the time, neither do we eat "smörgåstårta" för lunch. Both are for celebrations.
Glögg season is december, and it's not a constant drink unless you're kind of addicted because ir's just so good. (That would be me)
Aaaand then there's the whole "fika" thing. That actually bothered me a lot😂
When you go into a café in Sweden, people will not run up to you asking if you want "fika". That's just not a thing. "Fika" is the pause we take in the everyday to get some coffee or tea, maybe a piece of something sweet like "chokladboll"(chocolate ball, they're good and easy to make at home find a recipe online and try!). It's also for a social occasion, or when we go on a date, or just in the afternoon at work when the days are long and we need a break.
But if you into a café it's kind of just extremely well understood that you go to a café that has coffee and tea(yes we have tea) and cookies and such, to get those things and take a break from life. We don't talk about fika as much as this book makes us out to. We're also not up in your face like the characters are in the book. If you need something in a store, you go find personnel and ask, they don't come to you. When you go into a café, they speak to you when you are ready to order, we like to leave space for each other, so we don't run around asking excitedly if people are there for "fika".
And last but not least. If you're in the arctic circle in december, you will for a fact NOT see the sun. There is no waiting for sunrise, because it's not happening.
Sorry for the rant, it needed to be said😂
I liked this book, it's not bad at all, it's cozy and mushy and it made me happy!

Ultimate fireside read
A lovely story, with spectacular frozen landscape providing the scene for the many twists and turns. I loved the characters, especially Lars! Happiness, sadness and many lessons to be learned in this captivating book. Make yourself some hot chocolate, wrap yourself in a warm blanket and enjoy!

Worth preserving
Struggled with the book to start but was worth it in the end. It was slow at the beginning & at times I wanted to shout at the main character to stop being so silly but the book did finally pick up the pace & in the end I loved it.
