An elderly woman of striking beauty is found murdered in Orleans, France. Her identity has been cleverly erased but the method of her death is very specific: she has been killed in the manner of traitors to the Resistance in World War Two.
Tracking down her murderer leads police inspector Inès Picaut back to 1940s France where the men and women of the Resistance were engaged in a desperate fight for survival against the Nazi invaders.
To find answers in the present Picaut must discover what really happened in the past, untangling a web of treachery and intrigue that stretches back to the murder victim's youth: a time when unholy alliances were forged between occupiers and occupied, deals were done and promises broken. Doesn't Live Up To The Hype
I was disappointed with this book given some of the rave reviews it has received. For a start, it's too long - it should have been subject to more rigorous editing to make it a more compelling read. And while the descriptions of wartime Britain and France are well done, they are nothing out of the ordinary. Most readers will also have guessed the identity of Icarus from early on so when it was eventually revealed there was no surprise. The denouement struck me as fanciful in the extreme and totally unbelievable. I was relieved to have finally finished it - I had been tempted to give up about three quarters of the way through - but it certainly is not a book that I will re-visit nor is it one that I will recommend to others. On the plus side, the narration is very well done and the three readers help to relieve the tedium of having to plough on with the story.

Absolutely stunning.
I love Manda Scott’s books and so had high expectations - this audible version surpassed my expectations. Highly recommended.

Captivating
I don’t know where to start.Firstly I will listen to the story again. So many twists and turns in different era’s So well written., believable,
Scarily so . The production was excellent.The characters well defined.
I hope they make this into a film a mixture of bravery in time long gone and the ramifications carried forward into todays messy world of continued subterfuge .

Absolutely absorbing audiobook.
Wow! This is a really cleverly constructed story with 3 narrators perfectly suited to their parts. The book gradually ties together wartime French resistance and British agent's experiences at the closing stages, the consequences of which reverberate through the years. Concurrently we are told of a vicious murder which takes place apparently without motive and the lead investigating French police officer's unravelling of the case. Lots of wonderful detail (born of extensive research I suspect) creates an interesting and fascinating book. I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in WW2 and police mystery. I am now going to see if Manda Scott has written other books!

Fascinating in its complexity
This was a compelling listen. The story swung between years past and present but the excellent narration meant that it was easy to follow the characters in both time frames. Cannot recommend the narrators highly enough for their ability to make the characters come alive. Enjoyed every hour of the story.

Great wartime and modern day soy noval

Passé imparfait
Intricate, evocative story of a modern murder investigation interwoven with a legendary Second World War tale of spies and the Resistance which laid the foundation for it. The narration was so good, I was glad I listened; the storytelling was so good I bought two more copies to give away to friends.
