Summary
The instant Sherry and Carston meet, there’s desire and fascination in the air…but they’re complete opposites. Smart-talking Sherry fought her way up from poverty to stardom as a country music singer. Now, she’s ever in the limelight, ever surrounded by clamoring fans, male admirers, and paparazzi, and her spangled cowboy boots carry her all across the country, from one brightly lit stage to the next. A renowned but reclusive playwright, Carston cherishes his freedom, the silence of his home in the woods, and his solitary country walks. Any long-term commitment is obviously out of the question: how about a quick and passionate fling? But when their names are linked in the scandal press, Sherry’s plans to become an actress are revealed. Is their budding relationship doomed?

A book that will stay with you
What I really love about books is the differences an author can make with an old story. In this case, it's the unlikely romance between two characters. This is my first J. Arlene Culiner book, and I have to say, I love the plot. Carston is a playwright who has had bad luck with relationships. His marriage ended on a bad note and he is now gun shy. In walks Sherry Valentine..famous country singer wanting to become an actress. The sparks between these two are immediate, but their relationship is a slow burn. I loved the way these two interact, at times very forward, then backing away. With the changes in her career, Sherry is taken away from Carston, but he is never far from her mind. But life goes on, and her career path is changing. The questions come in though. Is she happy acting? Is this the new way her life is going to go? Are the tabloids reporting the truth and is she now in love with another man and Carston has missed his chance? These questions will be answered when you too listen to this story. I really loved the fact that story focused on characters that are not your typical young couple falling in love. Maturity and respect in these two play high roles and it is apparent with their choices. It is a refreshing story!
Jill Culiner narrates this story, and while I like the pace she sets for the book, I did find it hard to understand her accent at times. She does have distinguishable voices for the characters which is good and her tone is very melodic.
