Summary
HBO’s hit series A GAME OF THRONES is based on George R R Martin’s internationally bestselling series A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. A STORM OF SWORDS is the third volume in the series.
The Seven Kingdoms are divided by revolt and blood feud, and winter approaches like an angry beast. Beyond the Northern borders, wildlings leave their villages to gather in the ice and stone wasteland of the Frostfangs. From there, the renegade Brother Mance Rayder will lead them South towards the Wall.
The men of the Night’s Watch are ready for the coming of a great cold and the walking corpses that travel with it. But now they face a horde of wildlings twenty-thousand strong – hungry savage people steeped in the dark magic of the haunted wilderness – poised to invade the Kingdom of the North where Robb Stark wears his new-forged crown.
But Robb’s defences are ranged against attack from the South, the land of House Stark’s enemies the Lannisters. His sisters are trapped there, dead or likely yet to die, at the whim of the Lannister boy-king Joffrey or his depraved mother Cersei, regent of the Iron Throne. Cersei’s ambition is unfettered while the dwarf Tyrion Lannister fights for his life, a victim of treachery.
And on the other side of the ocean, the last of the Targaryens rears the dragons she hatched from her husband’s funeral pyre. Daenerys Stormborn will return to the land of her birth to avenge the murder of her father, the last Dragon King on the Iron Throne.

Critic reviews
‘Colossal, staggering… Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world… one of the greats of fantasy literature.’
SFX
‘Fantasy literature has never shied away from grandeur, but the sheer-mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads… Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias.’
Guardian
‘Truly epic… An extraordinarily rich novel… with its magnificent action-filled climax, it provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites… The book stands out from similar work by virtue of its superbly developed characters, accomplished prose and sheer bloody-mindedness.’
Publishers Weekly
‘A vast, rich saga, with splendid characters and an intricate plot flawlessly articulated against a backdrop of real depth and texture.’
Kirkus

Great Story, Poor Audiobook
This really picked up after Clash of Kings. I thought this book would be a bore but it's my favourite in the series so far. I can't wait to see what happens next.
You really need an updated version of these audiobooks. Roy Dotrice is just not cutting it. he has a bunch of great voices but he messes up a few times and the editing around it is no good.

Great instalment, well narrated
The book has it all, battle, magic, and the story nips along at a decent pace.
I wish people would stop criticising Roy Dotrice's narration. The novel has a huge cast of characters, and giving them distinctive voices is essential if you're to follow the dialogue. The choices he has made as to accents and pitch are completely in accordance with the characterisation.
BUT it is a bit weird to have an 88 year old man making sex noises in your ears; this book is just as dirty as all the others.

Dragons and Deceit...
Sometimes you have to 'sell' a dragon to 'win' an army... And sometimes you have to 'loose' yourself to gain 'freedom'... But who can say what would 'profit' you more....
Another excellent instalment of the series.

Wow
Amazing! Best of the lot so far. The intricacy of the storyline and how seamlessly it is weaved together is quite something.

Late to the party
These series of books are fantastic. More twists and turns than a rollercoaster. I haven't read them before or watched TV series. The writing is excellent and the telling better.

Got itself is a mesmerizing mammoth history and act of creativity. Roy Dotrice is my favorite reader ever, filling the character with life few others can.

masterclass
the first half is alittle dry but come the red wedding every chapter is a enthroling--- Danny's chapter especially. Wonderful performance, so we'll done. This is the first book that is especially different from the show and that makes it do much more gripping.

Fascinating!
Fascinating to hear how the story develops. Never know what to expect of how the tale will deal for each character. Dotrice is a master storyteller!
