About this listen

This is an audiobook about fear. Fear of a virus. Fear of death. Fear of losing our jobs, our democracy, our human connections, our health, and our minds. It's also about how the government weaponised our fear against us - supposedly in our best interests - until we were one of the most frightened countries in the world.

But why did the government deliberately frighten us. How has this affected us as individuals and as a country? Who is involved in the decision-making that affects our lives? How are behavioural science and nudge theory being used to subliminally manipulate us? How does the media leverage fear? What are the real risks to our well-being?

Ahead of any official inquiry into the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, Laura Dodsworth explores all these questions and more, in a nuanced and thought-provoking discussion of an extraordinary year in British life and politics. With stories from members of the general public who were impacted by fear, anxiety, and isolation, and revealing interviews with psychologists, politicians, scientists, lawyers, Whitehall advisers and journalists, A State of Fear calls for a more hopeful, transparent and effective democracy.

Essential reading.

I work in the Business Continuity / Contingency planning industry as a senior leader and this book is now recommend reading for my team. It lays out how not to manage a pandemic and how fear drives poor decisions in a crisis.

Compliance.

I have listened to this book twice, and will buy the paper copy for the third read through making notes and page tabs. The depth and breadth of the research to support her theories is breathtaking and well considered.
Mission creep, disaster capitalism writ large, the response to the pandemic has given many people and organisations the opportunity to push their own agendas. Whether it is simply more power and influence, a greater budget or making money, this book highlights so many mistakes and deliberate deceit by organisations and politicians.
I hope, I really hope that the author LD is invited to give evidence during the legal enquiries to follow.
A must read, keep a copy for reference where you will able to support an: ‘I told you so’ argument.

A brilliant work of research .

Blows the lid off all the nonsense of 2020. It illustrates that this government has been lying to us and continues to do so.
I hope you are writing a sequel Laura.

Everyone needs to read or listen to this book. Especially those that are going round virtu signalling and wagging their fingers at others.

Absolutely what needs to be known!

Although it is a great pity that such a book should ever have needed to be written, my thanks to the author for doing so! Incredibly thorough and detailed and in my opinion, totally accurate!

The Government do not have our best interests at ♥

The most important book to be released in the last 18 months. The politicians have lied, bullied and gaslit the entire UK population. A fantastic critique of government propaganda, one sided science and censorship.

At least your open to listen and that’s vital if

We’re to somehow unwind the mass psychological damage that has been caused across our societies. This book and many others are a critical read for the majority as since when has it been ok for us to be fearful of each other on mass? Or to even have a counter opinion that we can share without the retribution of division? We’re in a very dangerous place as a global society where the forces that run this world have nudged us all into places of endless division and conflict.

There are a handful of reviews that’s great, thousands of listens yet your the very few who have been willing to listen to a different viewpoint and one that’s based upon a lot of well researched fact. As another reviewer said for the pending COVID review …. Just like the one we had in 2009 when one banker went to jail.

It calls into question and in hindsight in 2022 the decisions of our governments and corporations that has led to our reality now. Cast back to 2019 and generally we weren’t perfect as a society but look at us now? We’re in a mess all whilst the money and power have been shifted upwards to the people who have a very nice care free life? Locked down in their tropical retreats, had a few parties despite being the ones who made it illegal for the rest of us to leave our houses.

This well researched book blows the narrative wide open, yet I’m not sure what we do with this and where this ends up as my life was pretty good in 2019. The subtleties of the psychological nudges that have effected everyone and if we think we’re immune to this then that’s perhaps why your still in the small minority who are prepared to have a conversation, to share opinions and to challenge.

When you have more juvenile mental health referrals than all other illnesses, you cannot go to the gym, you have to wear a mask to go to the toilet in a restaurant, to have your children scared to go near their grandparents for fear of killing them.

I run a data science team in a large tech company, I’ve got more mental health challenges with my people that are a direct consequence of this period now in history across what are normal, hard working and intelligent people - that alone is ringing massive alarm bells. For what ultimately transpires as woefully wrong data that has been exploited for the gain of the few.

Such an insight

Meticulously researched and balanced. Laura Dodsworth did an exemplary journalistic review of the horror that was 2020.

Very well researched, well read, really liked it.
The pandemic is like an initiation ritual into a new age, it happened right at the Great Conjunction, nno coincidence there.

A very important discussion.

I initially decided not to read this book as a assumed it was conspiracy or extreme views being discussed on the pandemic. This was not the case and deep down I knew that I had grave concerns around the ethics and impact of our governments response to the pandemic. A must read whatever your views. The worst thing we can do is not challenge our own views and not challenge the actions of those who are elected to serve us.
