Summary
A comic novel that follows the adventures of a man at a critical time in his life.
Salesman Harry Saunders is unhappily married, hates his job and is dreading the arrival of his fiftieth birthday. The cinema provides him with an escape from his gloomy existence and he views the people and situations he encounters through the prism of classic movies.
A sudden and unpremeditated act of courage catapults Harry into a series of dubious activities that he has difficulty extricating himself from. He loses his job and after his wife discovers that he has become friendly with another woman, his marriage goes steadily downhill.
When good things unexpectedly start happening to him, Harry is overcome with guilt about his role in a crime. He eventually decides to confess what he has done, with surprising results.

Spoiled by the reader.
The story is not bad, but unfortunately it's spoiled by the reader, who sounds like he's auditioning for a part in an amateur dramatics production.
