About this listen
In this Wall Street Journal bestseller, FBI agent Mercy Kilpatrick must unlock the mystery of a mass murder, and the secrets of its silent witness...
For Mercy Kilpatrick, returning to rural Oregon has meant coming to terms with her roots. Raised as a prepper, Mercy is now relying on her survivalist instincts to defend her town from the people the law can’t reach. But this time, an investigation calling up a dark past for her and police chief Truman Daly may be hitting too close to home.
A rainstorm has uncovered the remains of five people - a reprise of the distinctive slaughter of two families twenty years ago. Except the convicted killer is in prison. Is this the case of a sick copycat, or is the wrong man behind bars? One person might have the answer. The lone survivor of the decades-old crimes has returned to town still claiming that she can’t remember a thing about the night she was left for dead. As the search for the truth becomes more dangerous, Mercy fears that the traumatized woman may not have buried her memories at all. She might be keeping them a secret. And there’s a price to be paid for revealing them.

Fantastic story, Amazing Narration!
With a big time lag between a spate of family m*rders Mercy is back in action after her close run-in with a madman in Book 3. In this book, Kendra gives us a little more of Mercy and Truman’s relationship with them navigating both working in law enforcement and coming to terms with how they feel about each other. It’s Truman’s turn to go through the tough stuff in this one and boy does he have it bad. With multiple POVs giving us different perspectives on the evolving situation we still don’t have it easy trying to work out who is k!lling all these people. A survivor from years ago is now being stalked and it’s not till right at the end that we work out who the guy is who’s orchestrated these recent events.
Another thrilling read, with fantastic narration. Teri does a great job of conveying all the urgency and desperation of the situation from multiple POVs. No easy feat.
I loved the addition of Ollie in this book. A teen who’s lived in the woods for a couple of years, he finally gets a taste of civilization.
I can’t recommend this series enough. This one definitely had romantic relationship elements but it’s not high on the spice. However, don’t let that deter you, it’s well worth a nudge.
