Summary

An unforgettable history of French intelligence agents and courageous British pilots who risked everything in the fight against Hitler!

From 1941 to 1944, Bignor Manor, a farmhouse in Sussex, provided board and lodging for men and women of the French Resistance before they were flown by moonlight into occupied France.

Barbara Bertram, whose husband was a conducting officer for the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), became hostess for these daring agents and their pilots during their brief stopovers in their house.

But who were these men and women that passed through the Bertrams' house?

And what activities did they conduct while in France that meant that so many of them never returned?

Edward Wake-Walker charts the experiences of numerous agents, such as Gilbert Renault, Christian Pineau, and Marie-Madeleine Fourcade, and the networks of operatives that they created that provided top-secret intelligence on German defenses and naval bases and U-boats, as well as Hitler's devastating new weapons, the V-1 and V-2 flying bombs.

A fascinating perspective on WW2

This audiobook is superb. It takes a little while to get going, but once into its stride it doesn’t let up.

The book is meticulously researched and written in a fluent prose. The choice of author invites the listener in and keeps you there.

No annoying mispronunciations, and some impressive accents lend an additional dimension to this story.

The tension between SOE and SIS is covered in some depth, but that is the rightful subject of another story.

Download this and you won’t regret it.

Very Informative.

A very interesting story. It makes the hairs on your skin stand up regarding the suffering those agents went through to free France and ultimately Europe from the scourge of Germany. Especially liked the frantic pace of narrative when discussing the spy's and how the we're treated at the Farmhouse in England. Well worth the listen

A different perspective

Thee are definitely accounts just as good as this one when discussing the specific agents, and this book leans heavily on them in places. But the ‘lifting of others’ efforts works well because the perspective is from the Housekeeper. I just about lived with the impressions of the various protagonists although those of us of a British persuasion will have smiled as some of the ‘Allo Allo’ accents. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed listening to this book. It is well structured and well presented, and has a place in the corner of the SWW jigsaw that is the underground work in France. Respectful of the courage shown by many, particularly the French, in a nation where any choice was a Hobson choice. A really good little book.
