Summary

A lyrical and atmospheric homage to the strange and extraordinary, perfect for fans of Angela Carter and Erin Morgenstern.

This is the story of the greatest funambulist who ever lived.

Born into a postwar circus family, our nameless star was unwanted and forgotten, abandoned in the shadows of the big top. Until the bright light of Serendipity Wilson threw her into focus.

Now an adult, haunted by an incident in which a child was lost from the circus, our narrator, a tightrope artiste, weaves together her spellbinding tales of circus legends, earthy magic and folklore, all in the hope of finding the child. But will her story be enough to bring the pair together again?

Beautiful and intoxicating, A Girl Made of Air brings the circus to life in all of its grime and glory; Marina, Manu, Serendipity Wilson, Fausto, Big Gen and Mouse will live long in the hearts of listeners. As will this story of loss and reconciliation, of storytelling and truth.

Strange experience

I was never quite sure where I was with this story .....was this about magic, circuses or just the sordidness of life. The main character seems to be strangley self sufficient but also weak and directionless. The narrator was okay but narrates with a catch in her voice that sounds as if she is about to burst into tears. It maybe cleverly done and the reader/listener is meant to feel as if they are watching a magical show from a distance but I found it difficult to find anything to hook into in the story.

The World's greatest funambulist!

I listened to this in one sitting. It was a wonderful tale of growing up in a travelling circus. The lives, friendships, backgrounds and skills nurtured but above all the search for Bunny

Boring

This story didn’t really go anywhere and I was giving serious consideration bailing for the last couple of hours

Enchanting story and narration!

This book transported me back to a happier time where live entertainment and large crowds were a regular part of my life. Natalie Pela’s voice is perfect, engaging and just the right combination of ethereal and earthy. I wanted to listen to chapter after chapter (and often did) but also didn’t want the story to come to an end. Nydia Hetherington depicts circus life so vividly, its array of sounds, smells, textures and colours felt like they were coming right off the page (or out of the speakers) and into my room. I’m looking forward to checking out more from both author and narrator.

Not for me

I chose this title as it is described as 'perfect for fans of Angela Carter' but I couldn't get into this book at all - the protagonist is so irritating. Rambling on. I found myself shouting - get on with it! The narration felt overly pious and there are only so many times you can hear the words Serendipity Wilson before pushing the ejector seat button....
