LONGLISTED FOR THE BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE FOR NON-FICTION

A gripping, intimate story of one heartbreaking day in Palestine that reveals lives, loves, enmities, and histories in violent collision

Milad is five years old and excited for his school trip to a theme park on the outskirts of Jerusalem, but tragedy awaits: his bus is involved in a horrific accident. His father, Abed, rushes to the chaotic site, only to find Milad has already been taken away. Abed sets off on a journey to learn Milad's fate, navigating a maze of physical, emotional, and bureaucratic obstacles he must face as a Palestinian.

Interwoven with Abed's odyssey are the stories of Jewish and Palestinian characters whose lives and pasts unexpectedly converge: a kindergarten teacher and a mechanic who rescue children from the burning bus; an Israeli army commander and a Palestinian official who confront the aftermath at the scene of the crash; a settler paramedic; ultra-Orthodox emergency service workers; and two mothers who each hope to claim one severely injured boy.

A Day in the Life of Abed Salama is a deeply immersive, stunningly detailed portrait of life in Israel and Palestine, and an illumination of the reality of one of the most contested places on earth.

Much more than a Day

The terrible accident at the heart of this book is made three dimensional and evocative as the ripples span out backwards and forwards in time. The sheer detail of Israeli control and repression is what struck me most and how the policy of divide and rule means the Palestinians never speak or struggle with one voice.

Eye Opening

The small and significant details of Israel’s oppression of Palestinians are generally not spoken about. This book is refreshing in that it reveals these State behaviours and their impact on the lives of Palestinians.

tragic in microcosm and macrocosm, this story of blatant apartheid and divisional corruption should be told to all.

heart wrenching

This is a very human and heart breaking book that tells the sad reality suffered by the Palestinian people under Israel control. It shows the complexity of such relationships and the consequences of it.

This will live with me for a long time. Tragic, eye opening and maddening.

Incredible writing, somehow managing to be economical, factual, and incredibly moving.

Compelling

I liked this book very much - it provides a vivid and well researched account of an incident in Palestine and its impact on those involved. The writer investigates the event in depth, its historical/political context, causal factors, and its aftermath, and in doing so reveals stark and horrifying insights into the lives of ordinary Palestinians.
