About this listen

When it comes to gambling and love, you must decide upon three things at the start: the rules of the game, the stakes, and the quitting time.

Logan Sinclair, a gambler, has an ultimatum from his father to clean up his life and marry, or lose his inheritance. He complies with all but the marriage. His father dies before he can change his will, leaving Logan just weeks to find a bride.

Left stranded in a strange town, and forced by necessity to take a job as a saloon woman, Emma Jamison finds herself fired on her first night. She is desperate for a place to go, so she agrees to marry Logan, who needs a wife immediately. Logan thinks he’s married a saloon woman, and Emma is happy to let him think it. He wants to annul the marriage after six months, and that’s fine with her. Things go along well, until a man from Emma’s past finds her and causes trouble. Around the same time, Logan’s past catches up with his life. How can such a mess in both their lives ever cause a happily ever after?

Emma & Logan

Secrets always come to bite you in the end, and this story shows just that! Logan is an avid poker player, and as a result to keep him on the straight and narrow, his father adds a clause in his will that he must be married to inherit his ranch. Logan gets information from his friend Alan, and has Emma become his bride by proxy. As their story together begins, there Logan thinks Emma is a saloon woman, and keeps his distance from her so they can annul the marriage in six months. But as we know, secrets can cause a lot of problems, and this one brings a person from Emma's past to them that will change their lives. Not only does danger lurk, but a surprise for Logan is revealed. Barbara Goss writes such wonderful stories. This one I found to be particularly realistic. The desperation of a person can drive them to do things out of their comfort zone, as we see with Emma. And with Logan, there are misconceptions both with his family's past and with Emma that are easily construed. I find the realism refreshing, easy to understand and relate to. It makes the listen entertaining and interesting.

J. Scott Bennett always brings his best, and this narration is spot on. His voice is perfect for the historical romance genre, and I feel at home when I listen to him. He gives each character their own voice and adds just the right inflections to give you the feel of the story.

Very Enjoyable!

Sometimes one is just plain lucky and a beautiful, clean, sweet, enjoyable and easy to read story just lands on your doorstep and one can just sit back and read or listen to it.
That is exactly what happened today when my specially requested copy of this audiobook arrived and let me tell you, I couldn't wait to get started on it.
It tells of a second chance romance of a couple who get married. There are certain circumstances that lead up to their second chance at love which make for interesting reading.
The story is written with such compassion that I simply 'felt' for the characters and I kept wishing they would just open their eyes and their hearts and see what was right in front of them.
I will tell you that there is a really pleasant ending (of course - this is a romance, after all) and I find myself wishing that the story could have continued, but all good things do eventually come to an end.
And now to tell you the best bit about this audiobook - it is narrated by one of my favorite narrators, J. Scott Bennett. He has the type of voice that just lends itself to is kind of story and he really does a good job of it.
If you are looking for something to entertain you, then this is the book/audiobook for you!
I listened to the audiobook version and my voluntary review above is unbiased.
