About this listen

It isn't quite 'Don't buy any green bananas'. But it's close to 'Don't start any long books'.

In his mid-40s, Simon Boas was diagnosed with incurable cancer - it had been caught too late, and spread around his body. But he was determined to die as he had learned to live - optimistically, thinking the best of people, and prioritising what really matters in life.

In A Beginner's Guide to Dying Simon considers and collates the things that have given him such a great sense of peace and contentment, and why dying at 46 really isn't so bad. And for that reason it's also only partly about 'dying'. It is mostly a hymn to the joy and preciousness of life, and why giving death a place can help all of us make even more of it.

Truly life changing

This is the most profound book I’ve listened to in my life so far. It’s made me more grateful to be alive and has helped me cope the death of my best friend.

A no-nonsense, laugh out loud, intelligent and poignant account of facing imminent mortality.

I absolutely loved listening to this book. It is refreshingly blunt, honest, equally heartbreaking and heartwarming, poignant and humorous set of intelligent reflections at the end of life, with great advice. I dare you not to laugh and to have a tear in your eye whilst listening to this deeply human explanation of the author's experience whilst facing his own imminent demise. It's clear from his voice that he is at home and not in a studio, and that his health is declining during the recordings, which adds to the authenticity and how tragic, and in many ways how ironically short the whole story is. Important insights and straightforward advice for how to speak to someone approaching the end of their terminal illness. Loved the swearing! Uplifting and informative, and it stayed with me for a long time afterwards. Highly recommended.

An understanding.

So interesting. Wasn't able to listen to it on a regular basis, as it took me time to digest how thought provoking this whole scenario was. Have to say, I felt this was so brave to put together and how much I enjoyed listening to the very end. Huge hug to all of you.

Practical, philosophical and essential guide to dying

This is a beautiful book made all the more poignant having been read by the author himself. This should be a mandatory text for all medical and nursing students. Beautifully written. What an interesting man.

Truly beautiful mind.

I challenge anyone to listen to this book without crying, laughing, feeling more love for your fellow human and absolute gratitude. It really struck me throughout listening, how sad I felt that I couldn’t thank the author for the new perspective he has given me for the rest of my life. What an amazing man, I wish I could have met him.
