About this listen
What is a phrasal verb? A phrasal verb is when you take a verb and add a preposition, but the new combination doesn’t mean what either the original verb or preposition mean. So when someone says, “We will bring up that topic at the meeting,” it doesn’t mean someone is going to carry something upstairs! Instead, the phrasal verb “bring up” means to discuss something.
Every language has phrasal verbs, and English has more than 500 related to business topics, so it’s very confusing for a person learning English to hear familiar words that suddenly have different meanings when a preposition is added to them. Indeed, mastering phrasal verbs is one of the final steps in fluency, yet they are usually learned only by hearing or reading them, and then guessing their meanings through context. The goal of this book is to speed that process along.
