About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The resistance starts here...

No one speaks of the grace year.
It's forbidden.
We're told we have the power to lure grown men from their beds, make boys lose their minds, and drive the wives mad with jealousy. That's why we're banished for our sixteenth year, to release our magic into the wild before we're allowed to return to civilization.
But I don't feel powerful.
I don't feel magical.

Tierney James lives in an isolated village where girls are banished at sixteen to the northern forest to brave the wilderness - and each other - for a year. They must rid themselves of their dangerous magic before returning purified and ready to marry - if they're lucky.

It is forbidden to speak of the grace year, but even so every girl knows that the coming year will change them - if they survive it...

The Grace Year is The Handmaid's Tale meets Lord of the Flies - a feminist dystopia about a young woman trapped in an oppressive society, fighting to take control of her own life.

Creepy and evocative.

🧡 This is a beautifully crafted dystopia with an original take on female oppression. The romance elements do seem to happen a touch too fast, but I forgave that because the overall concept had so many layers.

💚 The idea that teenage girls are ‘dangerous’ to grown men together with the ambiguous addition of girls having magic is an effective metaphor for exploitation and sexualisation.

A YA handmaid’s tale

This book is a interesting comment on the relationships between women. It delves deeply oppression and adversity can put us against one another or bring us together.
All the while being a complete page turner! I put it on when I went to bed and ended up staying up all night to finish it. Spectacular.

it's a new Hunger Games

The concept of young women having to suffer in order to purge their wickedness is taken to a brand new level. Up until the very end I wasn't sure if this is a sophisticated analogy, a magical story, or both - and I didn't care.
The pacing was stuttered at times, but still I spent every (rare) spare moment listening. The ending was a bit too perfect, so it's bittersweet.
