Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The enthralling new biography of Ernest Shackleton by the world's greatest living explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

To write about Hell, it helps if you have been there.

In 1915, Sir Ernest Shackleton's attempt to traverse the Antarctic was cut short when his ship, Endurance, became trapped in ice.

The disaster left Shackleton and his men alone at the frozen South Pole, fighting for their lives.

Their survival and escape is the most famous adventure in history.

Shackleton is an engaging new account of the adventurer, his life and his incredible leadership under the most extreme of circumstances.

Written by polar adventurer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who followed in Shackleton's footsteps, he brings his own unique insights to bear on these infamous expeditions. Shackleton is both re-appraisal and a valediction, separating the man from the myth he has become.

Compassionate Account Of Heroic Deeds

A well balanced telling of the heroic story of a flawed hero. With the benefit of personal experience the author speaks with insight and conviction of feats of bravery and endurance that defy belief.

Beautifully written and well narrated.

The story in itself is fantastic but to have been written by Fiennes himself adds a further gravity. The narrator is fully invested with a knarly sea voice.

An absolutely amazing book. I didn't know very

much about Shackleton when I began this book - other than he was a British explorer. Ranulph Fiennes, with his unique perspective on adventuring and exploration narrates Shackleton's life. A really rivetting listen.

Thoroughly enjoyable

I already knew a lot about the Endurance trip, but no so much about the rest of Ernest Shackleton's life. I really enjoyed the story and also Ranulph Fiennes own observations from his extraordinary explorations.

Great for car journeys!

We listened to this on the recommendation of a friend who said it was great for car journeys as the whole family enjoyed it, and we all did. Ralph Fiennes' experiences and opinions interwoven through Shackleton's story really bring the book to life, and he reads it very well. "However" (you will know why the apostrophes if you listen), after reading the book I think the main hero is Mrs. Shackleton.

Excellent biography of a polar exploring legend.

A superb biography written by a man who knows what he’s taking about when it comes to polar exploration! If you intend to read one book on Shackleton then make it this one!

Epic tale of human limits

RF’s own experiences of polar exploration give this biography additional insight that adds a depth to the story.

Well written and informative

I really enjoyed listening to this book about a famous but little heard of (in modern times) British explorer and I enjoy how Ranulph Fiennes relates the story of Shackleton to his own experiences with polar exploration, and I'm shocked to find out that Shackleton was an absolute nightmare of a person and must have been hard work for his wife to put up with over the years as well as his constant bumping off of his debts in order to make his name, very interesting book but certainly makes me glad I never had to work with the guy.
