Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

An instant #1 New York Times bestseller

The funny, touching and unpredictable novel from the 15 million copy internationally bestselling author of A Man Called Ove.

In a small town in Sweden it appears to be an ordinary day. But look more closely, and you'll see a mysterious masked figure approaching a bank...

Two hours later, chaos has descended. A bungled attempted robbery has developed into a hostage situation - and the offender is refusing to communicate their demands to the police.

Within the building, fear quickly turns to irritation for the seven strangers trapped inside. If this is to be their last day on earth, shouldn't it be a bit more dramatic?

But as the minutes tick by, they begin to suspect that the criminal mastermind holding them hostage might be more in need of rescuing than they are...

Totally and utterly charming.

Because we are all idiots and that's okay.
I cried and laughed and cried some more.
An exquisite story reminding us that we are all human, all connected and all just trying to do our best.

Simply brilliant from start to finish

I don’t even know how to put into words how much I loved this book, it made me laugh our loud and sob in equal measures. I could relate to so maybe characters either myself or people I know and the author put into words so beautifully so many things we all feel. I have recommended this book to everyone I know it’s truly brilliant.

Warm, funny and insightful

This is his best novel to date, as funny and warm as the past books, yet this has en existential edge. Filled with little byggets of wisdom, kindness and reflections about our existence, it manges to balance it against a funny, bizarre story with unlovable characters who all turn put to be loveable after all.

This is one everybody should read

Hilarious, surprising, totally unconventional, indescribable, very touching and true, laugh out loud. The only thing I didn’t like is that it eventually ended.
I don’t understand why this book isn’t the talk of the year.
And very very well performed. Outright hilarious.

Something different!

A different story, different style, differently told. Both thought provoking and laughter inducing. A tale to make you smile, wince just a little then smile again - and beautifully narrated, the voice characterisation were excellent. Couldn't wait to finish it but didn't want it to end! An excellent introduction to the author for me - ordering my next one now! Heartily recommended.

Amazing

I stumbled across this. It’s brilliant - laugh aloud funny and moving too. Desperately seeking more books by the same author… Great narration too. Different voices for all of the characters without sounding annoying - very clever,

Fabulous read

I don't usually leave a review, but I enjoyed this book so much, I couldn't not.
If you enjoy little twists, humility, humour and true reflections of humanity don't debate any longer, listen to this book.
It is beautifully written and the narrator was superb.
I intend listening to it again and again.
