Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Bernard Samson returns to Berlin in the second novel in the classic spy trilogy Faith, Hope and Charity.
Bernard is trying hard to readjust his life in the face of questions about his wife, Fiona, and her defection to the East. Is she the brilliant high-flyer that her Department seems to think she is? Or is she a spent force, a wife and mother unwilling or unable to face her domestic responsibilities? Bernard doesn't know but is determined to find out.
Bernard's boss, Dicky Cruyer, is certainly not anxious to reveal what he knows, as he jostles for power with Fiona herself in London Central, and takes to the road with Bernard on a mysterious mission to Poland.

Excellent novel well read
wonderful novel mixing espionage , family, and betrayal in a very vivid and nuanced historical setting, that for me at least, doesn't seem
so long ago. Fascinating and gripping - poor Bernard is still getting the Messier end of the
stick as the plot unfolds and thickens. I'm so sorry to almost be at the end of this engrossing series.

Superb
Superbly narrated great story, one wishes the series never ends. This book invokes the grim reality of communist Eastern Europe while we were living the 80s yuppies years in London.

Always a new twist and turn
Love this series and I have one more book to go and I really don’t want to read it as I know it is the end of the series and I will be losing an old friend in Bernard .so much well documented history about post war Russia , Poland , Germany east and west also an insight into the Russian mind set ,not a lot changed in 2023 with Ukraine and the Russian invasion. I wonder if Len Deighton is writing now I do hope so ,such a wealth of historical knowledge intertwined through the years .I haven’t got the words to praise this books enough

These books just get better and better
The penultimate book of this trilogy of trilogies.
I am now starting to panic where to go next. Should I go for ‘Charity’ now, or out it off till later so I can kick the final can down the road?
The Sampson stories are strangely dovetailing with real world events and attitudes, and skilfully portray how big politics if nations and continents. interacts with little politics of families, work environments, and real lives.
Len Deighton is a genius writer; the narrator is a master of his craft and art as all characters come to life and swap round in an instant.

Excellent
I’ve listened to all the books in this series Twice. Just the best. Narration is perfect and the depth to the characters makes it all so believable. Make sure to read them in the correct sequence.
