Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The stunning new psychological suspense from the Sunday Times best-selling author of How to Disappear.

What would you do to protect your family?

Anything.

During a family holiday in Italy, you get an urgent call from your sister. There's been an accident: she hit a man with her car and he's dead. She's overcome with terror - fearing years in a foreign jail away from her child.

She asks for your help. It wasn't her fault, not really. She'd cover for you, so will you do the same for her? But when the police come calling, the lies start. And you each begin to doubt your trust in one another.

What really happened that night? Who is lying to who? Who will be the first to crack?

Good thriller but not excellent

The characters were strong and the story was easy to follow. The narration was really good.
But it's not a classic thriller and I often found my mind wondering throughout - which is something it never does with some of the top thriller writers.

Fabulous Story

Absolutely loved this story - enough to keep me engaged despite the disappointing narration. Characters are wonderful and you invest in their story. I enjoy stories that flip between different perspectives and this was not a disappointment.
The narrator isn't well matched, sadly, I found her lack of intonation and monotone voice difficult to listen to. With a less interesting story, I may have given up listening altogether.

Five stars all round

Gripping! Loved the story and the narration which worked so well with the way events continuously unfold. Absolutely superb!

Very poor narration

I managed to get to the end of what was a reasonable book but was totally spoilt by the awful narrator. I wish I’d read the other reviews in advance. The author has written other good books but with decent narrators this one is truly appalling with no inflection in her voice so it was difficult to work out which character spoke and when.

A bit unlikely

Narration was excellent but the story too far fetched for me. What a thoroughly unpleasant character Frannie is - I doubt anyone would want to cover anything up for her! Can’t recommend

Narrator on helium!

The first time that I've ever had to slow down narration speed. Barely any innotation or feeling or flow when listened to at full speed. Other than that, the family members who are so close and their lives intertwined, you really feel for them. Good conclusion.

Okay

The book started off well, with a good storyline, but drifted into mundane detail of veterinary procedures and an extended plot. The machine gun style narration was also very difficult to listen to at times, so would not purchase another book in future with this narrator.

Gripping well observed story about family bonds

Enjoyed this tale of family loyalty and the impact of murder on relations. Well written and structured. Reading was a little variable, lacking character nuance, and sometimes poorly paced in delivery. Odd pronunciation occasionally eg. Orbagine for Aubergine

Mixed feelings

I enjoyed this story, however, my enjoyment was seriously affected by the really poor narration. It was extremely rushed, not helped much by slowing speed down, and hard to understand as there was also odd intonation so meaning no was lost. Would definitely avoid purchasing another book with this narrator.

A struggle

I struggled to finish this book. Quite unusual as I like this author. Maybe it was the narration as I found it was boring and lacked expression.
