百社巡礼の対談相手・盛池雄峰師宅のある、山梨県上野原市の神社を取り上げ、収録も上野原で行う「上野原シリーズ」。第二弾は、市の南西部、都留市との境にある、雛鶴峠の麓、旧秋山村の無生野（むしょうの）に鎮座する雛鶴神社（ひなづるじんじゃ）。後醍醐天皇の皇子・大塔宮護良親王は、鎌倉幕府打倒の立役者の一人だが、父や足利尊氏と対立し、鎌倉で幽閉され、暗殺されてしまう。その愛妾・雛鶴姫は、親王の首を抱え、わずかな従者とともに鎌倉を脱出、逃れ逃れて、無生野へ辿り着いた。そこで皇子の子を産むも、母子ともに亡くなってしまう。その二十年後、護良親王の子・葛城宮綴連王（つづれおう）が、南北朝の戦乱を逃れてこの地にやって来るが、雛鶴姫とその子の話を聞き、不思議な因縁を感じてこの地に住み着き、73歳の天寿を全うしたという。護良親王、雛鶴姫とその子、綴連王を祀っているのが、雛鶴神社である。境内には、綴連王の墳墓もある。また綴連王は、父の護良親王、雛鶴姫とその子の菩提を弔う為、大念仏を始めた。これは今も続けられている踊り念仏の一種で、国の重要無形民俗文化財に指定されている。甲斐に伝わる南朝悲話と伝統芸能を探求する。
