 日本最西端、台湾まで約百キロ、沖縄県の与那国島。沖縄本島はもちろんのこと、八重山諸島の主島・石垣島からも遠く隔たった、正真正銘「絶海の孤島」である与那国島は、世界最大の蛾「ヨナグニサン」が生息し、「カイダー文字」という独自の象形文字も残る、自然も文化も極めて特異な土地である。中心集落・祖納（そない）に建つ十山神社（とおやまじんじゃ）は、沖縄特有の聖所・御嶽（うたき）が近代になって神社とされたものだが、与那国では、沖縄の他の地域と異なり、特に立入を禁止していないという。入口に鳥居はあるが、社殿は琉球建築であり、内部に香炉や「真天照」の文字が掲げられるなど、独特な様式である。この神社は、最西端の神社でもある（厳密には島のもっと西にも祠はあるが）。その祖納集落を見下ろす山の中腹にある岩窟「イヌガン」は、与那国の始祖たる女と犬が住んだ伝説がある。その奥にあるより大きな岩窟「ティンダハナタ」は、与那国の聖地であり、中世与那国の伝説的女酋長、サンアイ・イソバが住んだ場所と伝わる。彼女は巨体・怪力の持ち主で、霊力あるシャーマンでもあり、六つの乳房を持っていたともいう。与那国を支配下に置こうとやって来た琉球王朝軍を撃退したとも言われる。「ヤマト」とも「琉球」とも違う、日本最西端の島の独特な民俗を巡る旅の話。(C)高橋御山人2015 Travel Writing & Commentary
