Summary
維新回天の地、萩。江戸時代、約250年に渡って、長州藩主・毛利氏の居城があったこの城下町は、維新で活躍した数多くの長州藩士や志士を生んだ。彼らを吉田松陰が育てた事も、多くの人の知るところである。吉田松陰が開いた私塾・松下村塾も世に名高いが、その松下村塾の建物が、萩市内の松陰神社境内に現存する。松下村塾は、元々松陰の伯父・玉木文之進が開いたもので、松陰もそこで教育を受け、後に松陰が継ぐが、安政の大獄による処刑後しばらく中絶、後に再開し、明治初期には再び玉木文之進が塾頭となった。しかし、萩の乱に多くの元塾生が参加し、責任を感じた玉木文之進が切腹した為、再度中絶、しばらくして松陰の兄・杉民治が再興し、明治中期まで続いた。松陰神社は、その数年前、杉民治が松陰の硯と書簡を御神体として邸内の小祠に祀ったのが起源で、塾舎の保存もこの頃持ち上がった。正式に神社となったのは、明治後期、元塾生の伊藤博文や野村靖らの請願による。維新発祥の地でありながら、明治になって、敵味方に分かれて市街戦さえ行われた萩。萩の乱は、松陰の師・玉木文之進の切腹に見るように、萩市民や長州人の心に大きな溝や傷跡を残したと思われる。松陰神社は、それらを昇華し、萩市民や長州人の心を統合する役割も果たしたであろう。維新の遺址に、神社の本質の一つを見る。
