Summary
岡山県北部、津山市の中山神社は美作国一宮である。祭神は鏡作神であるが、資料によって異なる。特に「今昔物語集」は「猿神」であるとし、興味深い説話を載せている。その猿神に、年に一度の例祭で、地元の未婚の娘を生贄に捧げる習わしがあり、さる家の娘が生贄に決まった。親子共々成す術もなく悲嘆に暮れていると、東国から「犬山」という猟師がやって来る。犬山は、多くの犬を飼い、犬に獣を狩らせるのを生業としていた。犬山は、親から事情を聞くと、娘を嫁にする。そして、二匹の犬を選び、猿を食い殺すよう日々密かに調教した。例祭の日には、娘の代わりに、よく研いだ刀と、二匹の犬とともに、犬山が入った長櫃が、社殿に納められる。そこには、真っ赤な顔と尻の巨大な猿と、百匹ばかりの眷属の猿達がいた。猿達が今にも生贄を食べようとした時、二匹の犬が大猿に食らい付く。大猿は首に犬山の刀を突き付けられ、眷属の猿達は二匹の犬に殺されたり逃げ惑ったりした。そこで猿神は一人の神主に乗り移り、生贄の廃止と、犬山や娘、その親達を一切咎めないことを誓い、命乞いをする。大猿は許され山に逃げ、生贄も廃止され、犬山と娘は幸せに暮らしたという。中山神社最奥の岩壁に鎮座する猿神社は、この猿神を祀り、今も猿を象った真っ赤な人形が供えられている。異形の神の昔話を紐解く。
