 二〇〇四年の暮れ、北町貫多は、甚だ得意であった。同人雑誌「煉炭」に発表した小説「けがれなき酒のへど」が〈同人雑誌優秀作〉に選出され、純文学雑誌「文豪界」に転載されたのだ。これは誰から認められることもなかった三十七年の貫多の人生において味わったことのない昂揚だった。次いで、購談社の「群青」誌の蓮田という編集者から、貫多は三十枚の小説を依頼される。貫多にとって純文学雑誌に小説を発表することは、二十九歳のときから私淑してきた不遇の私小説作家・藤澤清造の“歿後弟子”たる資格を得るために必要なことであった。しかし、年が明けても小説に手を付ける気にはなれなかった。貫多に沸き起こった、恋人を得たいとの欲求が、それどころではない気持ちにさせるのだ。貫多は派遣型風俗で出会った〈おゆう〉こと川本那緒子の連絡先を首尾よく入手し、デートにこぎつける。
有頂天の貫多は子持ちの川本と所帯を持つ妄想をする。しかし、一月二十九日、恒例の「清造忌」を挙行すべく能登を訪れた貫多は、取材に来た若い新聞記者・葛山久子の、余りにも好みの容姿に一目ぼれをしてしまう。東京に戻るや否や、小説家志望の葛山に貫多は自作掲載誌を送るが、その返信はそっけないものだった。手の届く川本と脈のなさそうな葛山、両者への恋情を行きつ戻りつしながらも、貫多は「群青」に短篇、匿名コラム、書評を発表していく。そして、「群青」九月号には渾身の中篇「どうで死ぬ身の一踊り」を掲載されたが、その反響は全く感じられなかった。同じころ、葛山からは返信が途絶え、川本にはメールが通じなくなる。順風満帆たる新進作家・貫多の前途に俄かに暗雲が立ち込めるのだった。
