 民百姓のため、延いては美濃北山三万石のためと思い布令した年貢半減令が、股肱の臣たる城代家老・伊吹勘助の切腹をまねくに及び、藩主・百目鬼一郎太は進退窮まった。賽の目は百発百中いい当てても、家臣の本音を読み違えたのだ。　すでに他界した前藩主、父百目鬼十号と奥方の座を一郎太の妻静に譲った母桜香院の間には二人の男子があった。桜香院はなぜか、一郎太を疎んじ、次男重二郎を寵愛する。一郎太の決断は早かった。渋る重二郎を説き伏せて藩主代理を承諾させると、その足で江戸に向かった一郎太は、中山道板橋宿の手前で、護摩の灰を追い払ってやったのが縁で、江戸三大青物市場のひとつ、駒込土物店を差配する槐屋徳兵衛方に身を落ち着ける。だが、御家を離れた一郎太の江戸暮らしは、平穏無事ではなかった。槐屋は近隣を仕切る町名主で、なんだかんだと揉め事の仲裁に忙しい。居候の一郎太も肘枕で寝ているわけにもいかず、駆り出される。そんな折、博打の虫が騒ぎ出し、中山道の板鼻宿で知り合った女親分の賭場に遊んだ一郎太が武士の一団に襲われる。相手は二天一流の大垣半象、二度と刃は向けませんと誓った国家老黒岩監物の配下だった。©Eiji Suzuki 2018 (P)2023 Audible, Inc.
