Summary

京極忠高の長いこと抑えてきた癇癪が、家の名誉をきずつけられたことで爆発する。その結果、法度を犯して二十四万石の領地を没収されてしまう。たいへんな癇癪料をなげうった忠高を、妻・保子は赦し喜んでくれる。

岡崎藩の京極忠高は癇癪もちで有名だった。妻・保子を迎えてからは、過ちもなく過ごしていた。あるとき備中狭野城主の河内守信敏から書状が届く。京極家に仕官している源左衛門に仇討を願い出ている者がいるので、身柄を引き渡してほしいとのこと。だが忠高がわけを聞くと、源左衛門に非があるとは思えない。河内からの度重なる嫌がらせを受け、とうとう忠高の癇癪は抑えきれず、法度を犯し二十四万石の領地を没収されてしまう。
山本周五郎（やまもと・しゅうごろう）
1903～67年。小説家。山梨の生まれ。本名・清水三十六(さとむ)。名は生まれ年からつけられ、筆名は東京で徒弟として住み込んだ質屋「山本周五郎商店」にちなんだ。20代前半に作家活動を始め、39歳の時『日本婦道記』が直木賞に推されたが受賞辞退。その後も多くの賞を固辞する。江戸の庶民を描いた人情ものから歴史長編まで作品は数多い。代表作には、「樅(もみ)ノ木は残った」「赤ひげ診療譚」「おさん」「青べか物語」「さぶ」などがある。1987年9月には、「山本周五郎賞」が新潮文芸振興会により設定された。
