Summary
唐代の官吏・閭丘 胤(りょきゅういん)が、寺の厨(くりや)で、拾得と寒山に会ったはよいが、恭しく正規の名のりをあげて、笑い飛ばされる話。
貞観の頃、台州の知事職に相当する主簿を務めることとなった閭丘 胤（りょきゅう いん）は、求道者でもなければ、反対に無頓着な人でもなく、道を求めている他者に「盲目の尊敬」をもって接する人間であった。赴任の当日、リュウマチ性の頭痛に悩まされていた彼の元に一人の乞食坊主が訪れる。
世俗の権威主義、価値観を否定し、裸の人間それ自体の尊厳を象徴化した、鴎外短編中の逸品である。

1862年（文久2年）島根県に生まれる。森家は津和野藩の典医を務めた。10歳の時、父と上京し、官立医学校に入るためにドイツ語を学ぶ。1873年、東京大学医学部に12歳で入学。卒業後は陸軍軍医副になり、東京陸軍病院に勤務し、ドイツの衛生制度を調べるためにドイツに留学。1889年「小説論」、翻訳戯曲を発表するなど軍医でありながら文筆活動をしていた。「陸軍省医務局長まで務めたが、1916年に退官。その後、東京国立博物館に就任。1922年に60歳で死去。
