殿村が読唇術で向かいの席の「青眼鏡の男」と相棒の秘密の会話を盗み読んだのだ。
次の日の深夜、守はその会話の中にあった空き家を訪れるが、そこで目にしたのは5日前に失踪した美人女優春川月子が無残に殺される現場であった。犯罪を行ったのは「赤サソリ」と名乗る凶悪な犯罪者であり、現場にはその犯罪の証――「悪魔の紋章」として赤いサソリの絵が血で描かれていた。
警察での取り調べが終わった後、その帰り道で守は例の青眼鏡の男を見つけて後をつけるが、見つかってしまい逆に拳銃を突きつけられて脅迫されて、立ち去るように言われる。
男はなぜか守の名を知っていた。
「どうして僕の名を知っているんだ」と虚勢を張る守に男は、
「お前は大切な俺の餌食の兄弟だからね」と言い、さもおかしそうに笑った。
