大海原を漂うボート、そこには救助を待つ三人の漂流者がいた。
――有明友定男爵、その親友の大曾根大五郎、そして召使である久留須左門である。
不幸にも台湾航路の客船宮古丸の難破に巻き込まれてしまった三人が、 どうにかこのボートに縋りついて命を拾ってから三日が経とうとしていた。

遭難の最中に重傷を負ってしまった有明男爵は、己を悲観し かつて同じように妻・京子を想っていた大曾根に京子と自身の財産を託す。
男爵は友情からこれを伝えたのだが、当の大曾根は違っていた。
男爵に京子を奪われたことをずっと根に持っており、思わぬ形で幸運が転がり込んできたのを ほくそ笑んでいたのである。
そんな中で、召使の久留須が陸を発見するが、それを機に大曾根は二人を処分しようとした。 男爵を殺害したものの、久留須を取り逃がしてしまう。

帰国後まんまと京子と男爵の財産を手に入れた大曾根は 京子との子が生まれると男爵の子であった友之助を事故に見せかけて殺そうと画策する。
間一髪、友之助は大曾根の前に再び現れた久留須に助けられるのであった……。
