The Adventure of the Norwood Builder, one of the 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is the second tale from The Return of Sherlock Holmes. The story was first published in The Strand Magazine in 1903 with original illustrations by Sidney Paget. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are visited by "the unhappy John Hector McFarlane", a young lawyer from Blackheath who has been accused of murdering one of his clients, a builder called Jonas Oldacre. McFarlane explains to Holmes that Oldacre had come to his office only a day earlier and asked him to draw up his will in legal language.

The Adventure of Black Peter is a Sherlock Holmes story by Arthur Conan Doyle. This tale is in the collection The Return of Sherlock Holmes, but was published originally in 1904 in the Strand Magazine and Collier's. Forest Row in the Weald is the scene of a harpoon murder, and a young police inspector, Stanley Hopkins, asks Holmes, whom he admires, for help. Holmes has already determined that it would take a great deal of strength and skill to run a man through with a harpoon and embed it in the wall behind him.

Daraufhin engagierte uns das Opfer, Mr. Walters, um den verübten Mordversuch, angeblich ausgeführt von seiner Ehefrau, an ihn zu beweisen. Die Angelegenheit gestaltete sich aber schwieriger als gedacht.

Nachdem Watson wieder bei Holmes in der Bakerstreet eingezogen war und bei Holmes wieder der Alltag Einkehr hielt, kämpfte Watson weiterhin tagtäglich mit den Geistern der Vergangenheit. Der Tot seiner geliebten Caroline verfolgte ihn bis tief in die Nacht hinein. Holmes befand, dass es an der Zeit war, Watson mit seinen Erlebnissen zu konfrontieren, damit dieser endlich mit dem Mord an seiner Frau abschließen konnte.

Er bewunderte seine Güte. Er hätte sie töten und in einem Müllcontainer entsorgen können wie das wertlose Stück Fleisch, das sie war. Aber er hatte sich anders entschieden. Seine Gnade ließ sie in dieser Aufführung die Hauptrolle spielen. Er erhob sie zum vergänglichen Star und gönnte ihr all diesen Ruhm. Diese da, ja, sie hatte es verdient, ihm noch einmal zu gefallen.

Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson werden von Alice gerade genötigt in ihrem Familienalbum zu blättern, als Holmes eine dringliche Depesche erhält. Der Bürgermeister von Bran/Siebenbürgen bittet um Hilfe, da sich in seiner kleinen Stadt unerklärliche Vorfälle ereignen. Es mehren sich blutleere Leichen und schnell spricht man von einem Vampir. Zu Holmes und Watsons Leidwesen lässt sich Alice natürlich nicht davon abbringen, die beiden nach Transsilvanien zu begleiten. Holmes beschließt den Grafen in seinem Schloss aufzusuchen und den Dingen direkt vor Ort auf den Grund zu gehen.

Wisteria Lodge (Wisteria Lodge) erschien erstmals im August 1908 im Collier's Weekly und im August und September desselben Jahres im Strand Magazine. Ein aufgeregter Mann kommt zu Holmes in die Baker Street 221 b und erzählt, dass er die letzte Nacht bei einem flüchtigen Bekannten verbracht habe. Als er am nächsten Morgen aufgestanden sei, wäre das Haus, das Wisteria Lodge genannt wird, wie ausgestorben gewesen. Noch bevor er dies berichtet, erscheint schon ein Scotland Yard-Inspektor, der ihn wegen des Mordes an dem verschwundenen Hausbesitzer festnehmen will.

Der Rote Kreis (The Red Circle) erschien erstmals im April/Mai 1911 im Strand Magazine. 1917 wurde er mit sieben anderen Fällen in dem Sammelband Seine Abschiedsvorstellung veröffentlicht. Der Fall erschien in Deutschland auch unter den Titeln: Das Abenteuer mit dem Roten Kreis oder Ein Zimmer in Bloomsbury. Die Zimmerwirtin Mrs. Warren sucht Sherlock Holmes auf, weil ihr neuer Mieter sich äußerst seltsam benimmt. Er verlässt sein Zimmer nie und kommuniziert nur über handgeschriebene Zettel mit ihr.
