Fumio Takano was born in Tsuchiura (Ibaraki) in 1966. After receiving a master’s degree in history from Ochanomizu University, she made her debut as a novelist in 1995 with Mujika makīna (Musica Machina), which was a chosen for the final selection of the 6th Japan Fantasy Novel Award. While she enjoys writing alternative histories in a European setting involving musical motifs, she is recently interested in using Japan at the center of her works. In 2012, she won the 58th Edogawa Rampo Prize for Kamāzofu no imōto (The Sister Karamazov). Her works have been selected several for the Japan SF Grand Prize, including Kanto anjeriko (Canto Angelico) in1996, Akai hoshi (Red Star) in 2008, and Mazeru na kiken (Danger: Do Not Mix). Several of her short stories have been translated into English, Italian, Chinese, and other languages, and in 2023, Swan Knight was published in Scotland by Luna Press Publishing.
