Sergei Lebedev was born in Moscow in 1981. Both of his parents were geologists who worked in the remote areas of the USSR. Following their path at the age of fifteen, Lebedev spent eight seasons as a field worker in geological expeditions in the Far North of Russia and Central Asia. Lebedev became a journalist mainly focused on historical and educational issues. He also wrote investigative articles. Beginning in 2010, Lebedev wrote five novels dedicated to the theme of the hidden Soviet past, the impact of Stalin`s repressions and persecutions and their repercussions in modern Russian life. Four novels are written through the lens of the family`s history: Oblivion, The Year of the Comet, The People of August, and The Goose Fritz (Der Kronos kinder). They form a meta-novel that explores the Soviet totalitarian trauma from different angles and depicts a family imprinted by the trauma. His fifth novel, Untraceable, is an intellectual thriller exploring the shadowy world of the Russian secret services and their operations abroad. Lebedev`s first collection of the short stories, A Present Past: Titan and Other Chronicles, will be released in April 2023. Lebedev`s books are translated into 22 languages and were shortlisted for major book prizes.
