My favorite of my own books is The Long Field. It took me 40 years to live and 10 to write: a love story to my partner, Marguerite, to my parents, and to my chosen place in the world – Wales. I grew up in NJ but went to grad school in rural Wales. It gave me a perspective that suburban NJ couldn’t—one shared with animals, ancient human history and mythology, and the deep time memories of the planet. I love all my books, though - books about the American South, medieval art and forbidden love in France, and a world tour that I made in 1995: 15 countries in 5 months as I practiced my new language (Welsh!) with everyone from Parisian expats to Japanese students to Argentinean bankers. Now I live with Marguerite and our Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Topaz, in Northampton, MA and teach creative writing to undergrads at Smith College and MFA students at Lesley University. I’m also Co-Director of the Dylan Thomas Summer School at the University of Wales (it’s so much fun!). The Long Field was a Finalist for the Wales Book of the Year and named to The Telegraph’s and The Financial Times’ Best Travel Books of 2021 lists. It will be published in the US in July 2023!
