I'm fascinated by Arabic. This is a language that has remained in essentially the same form for the better part of 1500 years. So a book written a thousand years ago is read just as easily as a book published yesterday. This cannot be said about any other extant language. Think English: Shakespeare's works written in the 15th and 16th centuries are already difficult to read. Go back another 200 years to Chaucer and today's reader will need help to understand what is being said. My primary interest is to bring classical works in Arabic within the reach of English speakers so that they can experience the charm and eloquence of a language that is at once ancient and modern. In an earlier life I studied engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Business at Harvard Business School. But the degree that has given me the most satisfaction is the MA in Arabic literature which I earned decades after leaving college.
