I am a writer living in Chicago. I grew up in Central Ohio and worked on an assembly line in an auto plant, as a baker, as an organic farmer, as a dishwasher, a professor, a carpenter, and as an outdoor educator. I have lived in North Carolina, New Mexico, Texas, and Hyderabad, India. My work has appeared in the New York Times, the Guardian, The Times of London, Bennington Review, Ploughshares, Guernica, Gulf Coast, Quarterly West, and This American Life. I was named the 2011 Best Emerging Writer in Non-Fiction by the PEN American Center. I have a PhD from the University of Houston and an MFA from New Mexico State University. I was a Fulbright Scholar in India in 2002-2003 and am a co-founder of the award-winning Poison Pen Reading Series in Houston, Texas. My memoir, The Answer to the Riddle is Me, is about a very crazy time in my life. It is my first book. My second book, a novel, is called How I Learned to Hate in Ohio. I'm at work on a new novel and a collection of essays. I teach in Chicago. I have a dog. Her name is Alice.
